Dolpo Trekking - Days

Dolpo Trekking is a unique adventurous activity that offers a peek into both the wilderness of western Nepal and the rich culture of Bon Pos. Dolpa is an expansive mountainous region beyond the Himalayan range, whose culture and language is matches more to the Tibetan community than the communities in Nepal. Politically, it is the largest district of Nepal. People in the Dolpo region follow Bon Po religion, a religion followed by Tibetans before following Buddhism. Dolpo region falls in Shey Phoksundo National Park. Shey Phoksundo Lake in the national park is dubbed a fresh water lake in the highest altitude of the world. A beautiful water-fall more than 1000 m high emerges from the end of the Shey Phoksundo water fall. Dolpo region can be accessed from Jomsom or Beni in the east, Jumla in the west and Dunai in the South. Trekkers can either enter the region from a threshold and return the same path after trekking in the Dolpo region or exit through a different point. Dolpo trekking is a camping trek where we need to carry tents, sleeping bags and provisions for cooking. Trekkers are required to be in sound health condition for this trek. An upper Dolpo trek requires a special permit from Nepal government as it is adjacent to the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Dolpo, being one of the most remote and least developed regions of Nepal, is considered one of the most challenging trekking destinations of Nepal. Dolpo region was opened for outsiders in only 1989. Located between the Tibetan Plateau and Dhaulagiri Himalayan range, Dolpo region is very isolated part of Nepal and it has been strictly off-limit until only recently. During Dolpo trekking, you will get to explore the wonderful culture and lifestyle of local people and beautiful forests of oaks, pine and rhododendron.

Dolpo Region possesses the unique culture which is still intact and untouched of modernization. We pass through many gigantic Himalayan ranges including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri along with Kanjirowa among many others. Dolpo trekking begins with Jhupal village from where we begin to explore the real Dolpo territory. During Dolpo Trek, we have to pass through Numa La and then to Phoksundo Lake which is situated nearby Ringmo village. If you have watched the Oscar-nominee Nepali Movie 'Caravan' (which was the first Nepali movie with English subtitle), you will get to see how Dolpo looks like and how is the lifestyle and culture of local people. Caravan is entirely based on Dolpo Region.

These days, Dolpo trekking is getting more and more popularity among the trekkers. And for sure, Dolpo treks provide you very special and unique experience of all trips in Nepal.
