There are more than one trekking routes for Gosaikunda. You can either start journey from Syabrubesi or from Sundarijal. Gosaikunda is sometimes spelled as Gosain Kunda and Gosainkunda. Stretched over 34acres of area, this lake is the source of origin of Trishuli River.
There is a story mentioned in Hindu scripture that explains origin of this lake. The story goes as follows: ‘After drinking the lethal poison named Kalkut to save the world from demolition. The pain from drinking kalkut was unbearable. He began wandering in search of peace and arrived at this spot where he dug deep hole in the land with his trident. Water oozed out of the three holes and filled the space to make the lake which was later named as Gosaikunda. Shiv soothed his throat with chilling water from the lake and take rest inside this lake’. Gosaikunda Valley has altogether 108 lakes out of which Bhairabkunda, Saraswatikunda, Suryakunda and Gosaikunda are considered the major ones. The number 108 is considered auspicious in Hindu religion.
Weather in Gosaikunda makes it challenging to explore from October to June during which the lake itself is in frozen condition.
